MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

·       IN ALL CLASSES, SUBJECT TO THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR EACH CLASS AND THE TOLERANCES ALLOWED, THE BULBS MUST BE:

 

·       INTACT;

o   ONIONS MUST NOT HAVE ANY DAMAGE OR INJURY SPOILING THE INTEGRITY OF THE PRODUCE, SUCH AS CUTS OR PUNCTURES OR OTHER SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL DAMAGE SUSTAINED DURING HARVESTING AND/OR POST HARVEST HANDLING.

·       NAME OF ILLUSTRATION ONIONS 

o   UNHEALED INJURIES (YELLOW ONIONS)

o   UNHEALED INJURIES (RED ONIONS)

·       SOUND; PRODUCE AFFECTED BY ROTTING OR DETERIORATION SUCH AS TO MAKE IT UNFIT FOR CONSUMPTION IS EXCLUDED;

o   ONIONS MUST BE FREE FROM DISEASE OR SERIOUS DETERIORATION WHICH APPRECIABLY AFFECTS THEIR APPEARANCE, EDIBILITY OR KEEPING QUALITY. IN PARTICULAR, ONIONS AFFECTED BY ROTTING, EVEN IF THE SIGNS ARE VERY SLIGHT BUT LIABLE TO MAKE THE PRODUCE UNFIT FOR CONSUMPTION UPON ARRIVAL AT THEIR DESTINATION, ARE TO BE EXCLUDED.

·       ONIONS SHOWING THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS ARE THEREFORE EXCLUDED:

·       NAME OF ILLUSTRATION ONIONS 

o   MOULD (YELLOW ONIONS)

o   MOULD (RED ONIONS)

o   MOULD ON THE FLESH (WHITE ONIONS)

o   ROTTING (RED ONIONS)

o   NOT SOUND (RED ONIONS)

·       CLEAN; PRACTICALLY FREE OF ANY VISIBLE FOREIGN MATTER;

o   ONIONS MUST BE PRACTICALLY FREE OF VISIBLE SOIL, DUST, CHEMICAL RESIDUE OR OTHER FOREIGN MATTER.

·       NAME OF ILLUSTRATION ONIONS 

o   UNCLEAN (SOILED)

o   UNCLEAN

·       FREE FROM DAMAGE DUE TO FROST;

o   AN ONION IS REGARDED AS FROST-BITTEN WHEN MORE THAN TWO OF THE OUTER LAYERS OF THE FLESH ARE AFFECTED AND THE FLESH HAS A WAXY APPEARANCE. A WAXY APPEARANCE OF THE OUTER LAYERS OF THE FLESH CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY MECHANICAL HANDLING. THIS SLIGHT DEFECT DOES NOT AFFECT THE EDIBILITY OF THE ONIONS. THE WAXY APPEARANCE OF THE OUTER LAYERS DISAPPEARS IN A FEW DAYS AFTER VENTILATION.

o   THE ONIONS MUST BE PULLED WHEN RIPE ENOUGH TO MEET CURRENT PROVISIONS OF THE STANDARD, I.E. SUCH THAT THEY REMAIN SUFFICIENTLY FIRM AND DO NOT BECOME SOFT OR SPONGY.

·       WITHOUT HOLLOW OR TOUGH STEMS;

o   ONIONS WITH HARD AND FIBROUS FLORAL STEMS ARE NOT ALLOWED

·       NAME OF ILLUSTRATION ONIONS 

o   HOLLOW OR TOUGH STEM

·       PRACTICALLY FREE FROM PESTS;

o   THE PRESENCE OF PESTS CAN DETRACT FROM THE COMMERCIAL PRESENTATION AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE ONIONS. THEREFORE, THE ACCEPTABLE LIMIT WOULD BE THE ODD INSECT, MITE OR OTHER PEST IN THE PACKAGE OR SAMPLE; ANY COLONIES WOULD LEAD TO THE REJECTION OF THE PRODUCE.

o   FREE FROM DAMAGE CAUSED BY PESTS AFFECTING THE FLESH;

o   PEST DAMAGE AFFECTING THE FLESH MAKES THE PRODUCE UNFIT FOR CONSUMPTION.

·       NAME OF ILLUSTRATION ONIONS 

o   DAMAGE CAUSED BY PESTS

·       FREE OF ABNORMAL EXTERNAL MOISTURE;

o   THIS PROVISION APPLIES TO EXCESSIVE MOISTURE, FOR EXAMPLE, FREE WATER LYING INSIDE THE PACKAGE BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE CONDENSATION ON PRODUCE FOLLOWING RELEASE FROM COOL STORAGE OR REFRIGERATED VEHICLE.

·       FREE OF ANY FOREIGN SMELL AND/OR TASTE.

o   THIS PROVISION APPLIES TO ONIONS STORED OR TRANSPORTED UNDER POOR CONDITIONS, WHICH HAVE CONSEQUENTLY RESULTED IN THEIR ABSORBING ABNORMAL SMELLS AND/OR TASTES, IN PARTICULAR THROUGH THE PROXIMITY OF OTHER PRODUCT WHICH GIVE OFF VOLATILE ODOURS. IN ADDITION, THE STEMS MUST BE TWISTED OR CLEAN CUT AND MUST NOT EXCEED 6 CM IN LENGTH (EXCEPT FOR STRINGED ONIONS). IF THE STEM IS TOO LONG OR DEEP CUT THIS MAY LEAD TO SECONDARY INFECTIONS OF THE BULB AND EVENTUALLY TO DISEASES.
