·       THE VARIETIES OF PEARS MAY BE CLASSIFIED BY:

o   THE SIZE OF THE FRUIT: SMALL AND LARGE FRUITED VARIETIES;

o   THE SHAPE OF THE FRUIT: PYRIFORM, ELONGATED TO VERY ELONGATED CALABASH-SHAPED, GLOBULAR, PYRIFORM WITH IRREGULAR DENTED CONTOURS, SHORT OR ROUND TO OBLATE ROUND VARIETIES;

o   THE DIFFERENCE IN SHELF LIFE, I. E. TIME BY WHICH THE EDIBILITY IS REACHED AFTER HARVEST: SUMMER, AUTUMN AND WINTER PEARS. SUMMER PEARS ARE HARVESTED READY TO EAT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON AND HAVE TO BE MARKETED DIRECTLY AFTER HARVEST AS THEIR SHELF LIFE IS LIMITED TO A FEW DAYS. AUTUMN AND WINTER PEARS HAVE A LONGER SHELF LIFE;

o   THE TEXTURE OF THE FLESH: FINE, COARSE, MELTING, CRISP, FIRM, GRANULAR OR JUICY VARIETIES;

o   THE TYPE OF THE FRUIT SURFACE: SMOOTH, SLIGHTLY KNOBBLY, BUMPY AND MORE OR LESS CHARACTERISTIC RUSSETED VARIETIES;

o   THE COLOUR OF THE FRUIT SURFACE: GREEN, YELLOW-GREEN, YELLOW, BRONZE, WITH COPPERY OR PINK CHEEK AND RED VARIETIES.

·       PEARS OF SPECIES OTHER THAN PYRUS COMMUNIS, LIKE NASHI PEARS (PYRUS PYRIFOLIA) OR FRAGRANT PEARS (PYRUS USSURIENSIS) ARE NOT COVERED BY THE STANDARD.
