PEARS ARE CLASSIFIED IN THREE CLASSES, AS DEFINED BELOW:

“EXTRA“ CLASS

·       PEARS IN THIS CLASS MUST BE OF SUPERIOR QUALITY. THEY MUST BE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VARIETY.

·       THE FLESH MUST BE PERFECTLY SOUND, AND THE SKIN FREE FROM ROUGH RUSSETING.

·       RUSSETTING IS CAUSED BY INTENSIVE CELL DIVISION DURING THE EARLY STAGES OF FRUIT DEVELOPMENT. RUSSETING IS INFLUENCED BY SUCH FACTORS AS ROOTSTOCK, TREE VIGOUR, SOIL TYPE, NITROGEN FERTILISATION, WEATHER, CHEMICAL SPRAYS AND PRESENCE OF DISEASE. IN CASE OF PEARS, RUSSETING IS CHARACTERISTIC, BUT IT MAY NOT BE ROUGH.

·       THEY MUST BE FREE FROM DEFECTS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF VERY SLIGHT SUPERFICIAL DEFECTS, PROVIDED THESE DO NOT AFFECT THE GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCE, THE QUALITY, THE KEEPING QUALITY AND PRESENTATION IN THE PACKAGE.

·       THE VERY SLIGHT SUPERFICIAL DEFECTS ARE MAINLY VISIBLE ON SMOOTH SKINNED VARIETIES, WHILE THEY DO NOT CONTRAST ON RUSSETED FRUIT.

·       THE STALK MUST BE INTACT.

·       PEARS MUST NOT BE GRITTY.

CLASS I

o   2 CM IN LENGTH FOR DEFECTS OF ELONGATED SHAPE;

o   1 CM2 OF TOTAL SURFACE AREA FOR OTHER DEFECTS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SCAB (VENTURIA PIRINA AND V. INAEQUALIS), WHICH MUST NOT EXTEND OVER MORE THAN 0.25 CM2 CUMULATIVE IN AREA;

o   SLIGHT BRUISING NOT EXCEEDING 1 CM2 IN AREA.

·       THE STALK MAY BE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED.

·       PEARS MUST NOT BE GRITTY.

·       PEARS IN THIS CLASS MUST BE OF REASONABLE QUALITY AND SUITABLE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

·       THE FLESH MUST BE FREE FROM MAJOR DEFECTS.

·       THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS MAY BE ALLOWED, PROVIDED THE PEARS RETAIN THEIR ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS AS REGARDS THE QUALITY, THE KEEPING QUALITY AND PRESENTATION:

o   DEFECTS IN SHAPE;

o   DEFECTS IN DEVELOPMENT;

o   DEFECTS IN COLOURING;

o   TURNING COLOUR OF RIPENING FRUIT AS WELL AS BLUSH OR RED CHEEK ON GREEN/YELLOW FRUIT IS NOT A COLOUR DEFECT. DEFECTS IN COLOURING MAY BE DUE TO SUN OR CHIMAERAS.

o   2.5 CM2 OF TOTAL SURFACE AREA FOR OTHER DEFECTS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SCAB (VENTURIA PIRINA AND V. INAEQUALIS), WHICH MUST NOT EXTEND OVER MORE THAN 1 CM2 CUMULATIVE IN AREA;

o   SLIGHT BRUISING NOT EXCEEDING 2 CM2 IN AREA.

·       THE STALK MAY BE MISSING, PROVIDED THE BREAK IS CLEAN AND THE ADJACENT SKIN IS NOT DAMAGED.

·       PEARS MAY BE GRITTY, PROVIDED THE FLESH AND THE EDIBILITY ARE NOT SERIOUSLY AFFECTED. GRITTY FRUITS ARE MORE OR LESS DEFORMED AND HAVE GOT LARGER BROWN DISCOLOURED AGGREGATES OF SCLEROTIC CELLS IN THE FLESH. THE SURFACE OF THE FRUIT IS INTACT BUT THERE ARE OFTEN DARK GREEN AND SUNK PATCHES. GRITTINESS IS A SIGN OF INCOMPLETELY FRUIT DEVELOPMENT. SLIGHT GRITTINESS IS ALLOWED, PROVIDED THE STONES ARE SHALLOW AND NOT MORE THAN 2 TO 3 IN NUMBER.
