ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES ARE CLASSIFIED IN TWO CLASSES, AS DEFINED BELOW:

CLASS I

·       ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES IN THIS CLASS MUST BE OF GOOD QUALITY. THEY MUST BE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VARIETY AND/OR COMMERCIAL TYPE.

·       THE ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES MUST BE WELL FORMED.

·       THE FOLLOWING SLIGHT DEFECTS, HOWEVER, MAY BE ALLOWED, PROVIDED THESE DO NOT AFFECT THE GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCE, THE QUALITY, THE KEEPING QUALITY AND PRESENTATION IN THE PACKAGE:

o   A SLIGHT DEFECT IN SHAPE;

o   SLIGHT DEFECTS IN COLOURING OF THE SKIN;

o   SLIGHT BRUISING AND DAMAGE REMOVABLE BY NORMAL PEELING;

o   SLIGHT BRUISING AND DAMAGE ARE ALLOWED PROVIDED THEY ARE SHALLOW AND COVER A SMALL AREA ONLY. A SINGLE PEELING DEPTH SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR ELIMINATING THE DEFECT AND REVEALING SOUND FLESH.

§  NAME OF ILLUSTRATION

§  BRUISING

o   SLIGHT SKIN DEFECTS INCLUDING SLIGHT HEALED CRACKS.

§  NAME OF ILLUSTRATION

§  CRACKS

o   THE FLESH MUST BE BE PERFECTLY SOUND.

o   IN CASE OF PRODUCE PRESENTED WITH LEAVES, THE LEAVES MAY BE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED.

CLASS II

·       THIS CLASS INCLUDES ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES THAT DO NOT QUALIFY FOR INCLUSION IN CLASS I BUT SATISFY THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIED ABOVE.

·       ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES IN THIS CLASS MUST BE OF REASONABLE QUALITY AND SUITABLE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

·       THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS MAY BE ALLOWED, PROVIDED THE ROOT AND TUBERCLE VEGETABLES RETAIN THEIR ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS AS REGARDS THE QUALITY, THE KEEPING QUALITY AND PRESENTATION:

o   DEFECTS IN SHAPE;

o   DEFECTS IN COLOURING OF THE SKIN;

o   BRUISING AND DAMAGE REMOVABLE BY NORMAL PEELING;

§  BRUISING AND DAMAGE ARE ALLOWED PROVIDED THEY ARE SHALLOW. A SINGLE PEELING DEPTH SHOULD
BE SUFFICIENT FOR ELIMINATING THE DEFECT AND REVEALING FLESH FREE FROM MAJOR DEFECTS.

o   HEALED CRACKS NOT REACHING THE CORE OR IN CASE OF KOHLRABI NOT MORE THAN 1 CM DEEP;

§  HEALED CRACKS ARE ACCEPTABLE PROVIDED THEY DO NOT EXPOSE THE CORE OF THE ROOT OR TUBERCLE
AND ARE CLEAN AND DRY.

o   ONE FORK (TWO TIPS).

§  ROOTS MAY SHOW NO MORE THAN TWO TIPS.

§  NAME OF ILLUSTRATION

§  FORK

·       THE FLESH MUST BE FREE FROM MAJOR DEFECTS.

·       IN CASE OF PRODUCE PRESENTED WITH LEAVES, THE LEAVES MAY BE DAMAGED, BUT MUST BE FREE OF PROGRESSIVE DEFECTS AFFECTING THE PRODUCE.
